Sandwich Ministry
Remember the time of hunger in the time of
plenty,
poverty and want in the day of wealth.
Sirach 18:25
This ministry is on hold during
the pandemic
St. Martin de Porres, a Catholic Community Services homeless shelter for men 50 and over, provides
overnight shelter and a nightly meal for 100 men. During the pandemic, St. Martin's has cooperated
to send another 100 men to other shelters and hotels around King County.
In addition to the Winter Shelter
program, St. James parishioners support SMdP by preparing sandwiches,
boiled eggs, and cookies for men age 50 and older. Volunteers prepare food at home
on the second and fourth Mondays of each month (as well as fifth Mondays when there is one).
Prepared food can be dropped off after Sunday masses the day prior, or on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Mondays of the month in
the Parish Office between 9am and 1pm.
At this time, many of the emergency hotels and other shelters do not have space where men can
cook, so there is more need now than ever to provide food which is ready to go for the guests. St. Martin's
and the men thank you hugely for your service and your generosity!
